In computer lingo, a computer server is a single piece of computer hardware or Software that provides specific functionality for electronic devices, termed “clients”, such as printers and personal computers. This architecture is also known as the server or client model. The most common computer servers are desktop systems that work for single computers. Larger computer servers are now used to support multiple computer peripherals such as printers, disk drives, and network interface cards.
A computer server basically controls the overall computer operation. It orchestrates communication between client machines and modifies various processes on the client computers. It is therefore important that computer servers are synchronized between multiple computers.
In terms of its definition, the term server refers to a single device that hosts several computers connected to it. The word “router” refers to a network component that allows several computers to connect to a single router. In a small network, router and hub are usually located in the same building. In larger networks, however, hubs and routers are usually located in separate buildings with separate access ways.
The hardware components of a computer server usually include three main hardware components: Central processing unit (CPU), Storage Area Network (SAN) devices, and Operating System. The CPU is the heart of the server. In fact, it is the only part of the server that can be fully automated; meaning, the operating systems and other software can be loaded into the CPU itself without need for manual involvement. The operating systems load software applications on the CPU and then communicate with them over the network.

The only thing that varies among the computers is the software library and other network services they can use.
